Azerbaijan launches new oil tanker named after leading scholar

Azerbaijan Caspian Shipping Company (ASCO) launched the tanker named after academic Khoshbakht Yusifzade, Tendency reported on September 20 citing ASCO.

According to the company, the tanker was built by his order at the Baku shipyard.

Speaking at the oil tanker launching ceremony, ASCO Chairman Rauf Valiyev said Academician tanker Khoshbakht Yusifzade is the third tanker built at the Baku Shipyard on company order.

Previously, this shipyard built and commissioned the Lachin and Kalbajar tankers.

“In the past eight years, our fleet has been replenished with 18 new vessels. Orders have also been placed for the construction of 10 other similar vessels at the Baku shipyard,” noted Valiyev.

The launch ceremony participants also noted that the concept of the new tanker had been jointly developed with the Ukrainian Maritime Engineering Office in Odessa and specialists from ASCO.

The ordered tanker is 141 meters long, 16.9 meters wide and six meters high. The ship’s crew consists of 15 people and the speed is 10 knots per hour.

The vessel has six tanks with a total capacity of 9,212 cubic meters for the transport of crude oil and petroleum products. The vessel is fitted with two Wartsila engines, each with a capacity of 1,200 kW.

ASCO Chairman Rauf Valiyev, Shipyard General Manager Imanverdi Hasanov, and employees of both companies took part in the launch ceremony.

Khoshbakht Yusifzadeh is Doctor of Science in Geology and Mineralogy, First Vice-President of Azerbaijan State Oil Company for Geology, Geophysics and Field Development. Yusifzadeh is known to have discovered many oil and gas fields such as Bahar, Gunashli, Azeri, Chirag, Kapaz and others. He is also a member of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences.
