Bechtel-led coalition to support Egypt’s decarbonization strategy

  • Egypt study on routine zero LNG flaring credited to Bechtel-led coalition for decarbonizing existing facility
  • The coalition includes Bechtel, Enppi, Petrojet, Baker Hughes, GE Digital, HSBC and NBE

CAIRO, November 12, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — Egyptian LNG awarded a feasibility study contract to the Bechtel-led Decarbonization Coalition which includes Enppi, Petrojet, Baker Hughes, GE Digital, HSBC and NBE. The study will assess the implementation of a zero flare system at the Egyptian LNG (ELNG) export terminal at Idku, east of Alexandria. HE Tarek El MollaEgyptian Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, presided over the signing ceremony during the Decarbonization Day events in COP 27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt.

The feasibility study will evaluate options for full recovery from routine flaring through modifications to existing flaring and compression systems at the ELNG facility, thereby reducing methane emissions from this strategic regional facility. The project fully supports the Methane Global Pledge signed by HE Abdel Fattah Al SisiPresident of Egyptin June 2022. LNG will play a key role in supplying reliable, responsible and sustainable energy to Europe following the trilateral agreement signed between Egyptthe European Union and Israel earlier this year.

The project is part of a larger program between the Coalition and the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to decarbonize existing oil and gas facilities across the country and deliver on egypt climate change strategy. The Decarbonization Coalition was formed earlier this year between Bechtel, Enppi, Petrojet, Baker Hughes, GE Digital, HSBC and National Bank of Egyptunder the auspices of HE the Minister Tarek El Molla.

“I’m so proud that egypt The oil and gas sector contributes significantly to the achievement of the main strategic objectives and priorities: to accelerate decarbonization and to apply cutting-edge technologies and solutions in this field” His Excellency the Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Tarek El Molla said. “I am pleased that the sector is working with our partners to take such initiatives and promote these priorities.”

“This initiative is an important part of ELNG’s ongoing efforts to make operational improvements to our two LNG trains,” said ELNG CEO Eng. Mohammad Elbahnasy. The reduction and recovery of flares will reduce our greenhouse gas emissions and optimize the fuel consumption and operating hours of our rotating equipment, in order to improve production and reduce operating costs.”

“This project is a demonstration of our commitment to driving progress by delivering more, cleaner energy,” Eng. Khaled Kacem, vice president and national president of Shell Egypt, said. “As partners of egypt becoming a regional energy hub, we are also mobilizing our efforts and our expertise to support the country’s ambitions in terms of energy efficiency. It is also an important step towards the full implementation of the Decarbonisation Memorandum of Understanding between Shell and the Ministry which was signed earlier this year. »

“This project is an excellent example of partnership between the private and public sectors to support egypt decarbonization strategy that will enhance energy security in the region,” Paul Marsden, said the president of Bechtel Energy. “We bring world-class expertise in the execution, technology and financing necessary to enable Egypt to achieve its decarbonization goals. We look forward to continuing our partnership with the people of Egypt.”

“At Baker Hughes, we believe that collaboration and partnerships are necessary to achieve a zero-net emissions future. This project is another step to show our continued commitment to supporting egypt decarbonization journey and climate change strategy,” said Laurent Simonelli, Chairman and CEO of Baker Hughes. “As an energy technology company, we are committed to providing technology-based solutions that can contribute to energy security and sustainability in Egypt and beyond, and the Decarbonization Coalition is essential to help effectively accelerate the deployment of these technologies.”

CEO of GE Digital Scott Reese said, “As the world comes together Egypt for COP27, solutions that can help decarbonize the industry will be at the forefront of the conversation. Software plays a key role and is essential to accelerate the energy transition. Together with our partners, we hope that the conclusions of this feasibility study will have a considerable impact on the LNG industry in Egypt and beyond.”

“The energy transition is a journey that requires a clear vision with an effective strategic tool to achieve its objectives, the vision and the sustainable energy efficiency strategy that has been defined by the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources in full compliance with egypt vision reflected in the reception of the COP27 in Sharm El Sheikh.” Eng. mohamed abdelazizdeclared the president of Enppi.

“Enppi, with its engineering leadership, is committed to effectively contributing to the implementation of this strategy, and is proud to continue the successful coalition we have begun with leading affiliates in the sector. I look forward to more of our fruitful cooperation and our team spirit, which makes me confident that together we can achieve with full commitment the decarbonization of our sector.”

“Once again, our coalition is proving to be an effective vehicle to help the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources decarbonize existing oil and gas facilities across the country.” Eng. Walid Lotfy, Chairman and CEO of Petrojet, said. “As we now present an exceptionally successful series of COP27 in egypt Sharm El Sheikh, I look forward with great enthusiasm to the coalition embarking on further challenges.”

The feasibility study will be executed on an accelerated basis with the aim of moving to the initial engineering design (FEED) phase by early 2023.

The project demonstrates the operational excellence of the ELNG plant. Reducing greenhouse gas emissions and optimizing fuel consumption and operating hours of rotating equipment will improve production and reduce operating costs.
