HIGHGATE SPORTS ARENA — The Milton Yellowjackets men’s hockey team earned a 4-2 senior victory over the MMU Cougars on Saturday night. Before the first puck drop, Milton recognized the seven seniors and their families on the ice in a pre-game ceremony.
Owen Severy set the Jackets up first with a late power-play goal in the first period, but MMU responded early in the second on a flukey shot that goaltender Teddy Munson would have liked to recover.
The Cougars headed into the third period with 1:12 left on the power play. On a shot that made a strange bounce in front of the net, they took the opportunity to secure a brief 2-1 lead. Milton came back strong in the game two minutes later as Severy scored his second goal of the night, followed by Riley Zeno who scored the eventual game winner on a shot that was laser fired over the shoulder of the Cougar keeper.
“Watching the warm-ups, I try to get an idea of where to shoot the (opponent’s) goaltender,” Yellowjackets head coach Bryant Perry said. “He (Zeno) finally shot where I asked people to and he went in. You could just feel a change in momentum and the bench was on. That was an important goal right there!
Momentum entirely in the Jackets’ favor at this point, Cam Fougere found a seam to bring the Severy puck across the offensive zone for a final power-play goal. The goal completed Severy’s hat trick and showed how deadly Milton’s power play is this season.
“Our power play has always been a strong point for us,” said Cooper Goodrich, the eldest of the Yellowjackets. “We move the puck really well and dominate on the power play. It’s really something we look forward to when we’re in a game.
Fougere echoed Goodrich’s sentiment saying, “We have five really talented players who are always raising their heads and looking for the open man. We find space in the offensive zone very well and look for seams or stolen passes. We have good chemistry on the power play.
In all, five of the seven seniors have made their mark on the scoresheet. Cam Fougere (2A), Cooper Goodrich (3A), Riley Zeno (1G) Brandon Mitchell (3A) and Teddy Munson made 25 saves. Owen Severy’s hat-trick wrapped up the Jackets’ score.
After the game, we had a chance to talk to some seniors about getting a win for their senior night.
Teddy Munson and Zorion Seaman attend BFA-Fairfax but play hockey for the Milton Yellowjackets hockey program. We caught up with the two eldest to talk about their experience playing a sport at another school.
