Hexicon’s Celtic Sea floating wind project obtains

Swedish floating wind technology company Hexicon announced on Friday that its Twin Hub springboard project has been awarded a marine license for the installation of an offshore floating wind demonstrator in the Celtic Sea.

“The Twin Hub floating demonstrator project in the Celtic Sea has now been granted a marine license, for a renewable energy test site in Cornwall, South West England. The marine license is the latest agreement for the project that won a Section 36 agreement in 2020,” said the developer of a twin-turbine floating foundation.

Hexicon has completed the July 2021 acquisition of the licensed site and will deploy its twin-turbine floating foundation for a 30-40 MW floating offshore wind demonstration project.

Hexicon is working with Bechtel, a world leader in engineering, construction and project management to implement the program.

“The project is expected to be the first floating offshore wind project in the Celtic Sea, a key stepping stone for the UK government to reach its target of 1GW of floating wind by 2030. The Celtic Sea is an important area for offshore wind development floating, with plans for up to 4 GW of new floating wind capacity to be unlocked in the Celtic Sea by 2035, as announced by The Crown Estate in November 2021,” Hexicon said.

Hexicon said it believes its project will be the first stepping stone to facilitate future projects in the Celtic Sea.

The project plans to use existing infrastructure already installed at the site, including an offshore export cable, onshore substation and existing grid connection agreements.
