Washington (WREX) – Describes a man from Illinois who was killed during World War II.

The Defense POW / MIA Accounting Office (DPAA) is now a Navy firefighter 1st Class Robert J. Har, 25, of Dallas City, Illinois, who was killed in World War II, was described on February 12, 2021.

On December 7, 1941, Har was assigned to the battleship USS. Oklahoma, A ship moored on Ford Island in Pearl Harbor was attacked by a Japanese plane.

USS Oklahoma Several torpedoes hit and capsized immediately. The attack on the ship killed 429 crew members, including Har.

From December 1941 to June 1944, Navy personnel collected the bodies of the deceased crew members and were subsequently buried in the cemeteries of Halawa and Nuuanu.

In September 1947, members of the US Cemetery Registration Service (AGRS) dismantled the bodies of American victims from two cemeteries in Schofield Barracks, tasked with recovering and identifying Americans who died in the Pacific War. Transferred to the Central Identification Laboratory.

Laboratory staff could only confirm the identity of 35 men from the USS Oklahoma at this moment. AGRS then buried an unidentified body in Section 46 of the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific (NMCP), known as the Honolulu Punchbowl.

In October 1949, the Military Commission classified those who could not be identified as irreparable, including Har.

Between June and November 2015, DPAA officials unearthed the USS Oklahoma Unknown to the punch bowl for analysis.

To identify Har’s body, DPAA scientists used anthropological analysis. further, Military coroner system Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y chromosome DNA (Y-STR) analysis was used.

Har’s name is registered in the Punchbowl Court for the Missing, along with others who disappeared during WWII. A rosette is placed next to his name to indicate that he has been described.

Har will be buried in Rutridge, Missouri on August 14, 2021.
