Navy seeks “coaches” to enhance personal and professional growth of sailors


The Navy is looking for coaches to improve the performance of Sailors, but the deadline to apply is fast approaching.

The coaching initiative, which is part of the Defense Interservice Coaching internal training program, is designed to channel regular and constructive feedback to enhance “personal and professional goal setting,” according to the Navy.

As a result, the Navy is accepting applications for 24 coaching positions.

Eligible individuals must be active duty or reservists between grades O-3 and O-5 for officers, or E-6 and above for enlisted personnel.

Applications must be submitted by October 18 and those selected will be notified by November 15.

“Volunteers must have self-awareness, good listening skills, respect and reliability,” said a Navy press release. “They need to be sensitive and discreet about other people’s problems and regularly express their encouragement and optimism regardless of the situation. In addition, they must be responsible and hold others up to this standard. “

Lt. Cmdr. Erica Harris, certified coach and research psychologist at Navy Personnel Command, is spearheading the initiative and said the coaching sessions are aimed at fostering the professional growth of a Sailor with the support of an ally in the ‘coach.

This means that the sailor, or training partner, directs the material for the session discussions while the coach listens and asks questions, she said.

“Too often we try to ‘solve’ someone’s problem, problem or challenge, but in coaching you allow the coaching partner to find the solution,” Harris said, according to the release.

Those selected for the coaching initiative will go through a 16-week, multi-service virtual training program starting in November, known as the Coaching Culture Facilitator Course.

This initiative should not be confused with the mid-term council, according to Fleet Master Chief Wes Koshoffer.

“Coaching is not halfway point advice,” Koshoffer said, according to the statement. “Mid-term counseling is linked to performance reviews. This is indirect feedback that takes place only once per evaluation cycle. I would like every leader in the Navy to understand the training techniques and be able to apply them consistently.

“Effective coaching sessions check where we are at, set goals and determine what opportunities and possible paths to get there are – then engage in some sort of action plan to do so with regular follow-ups,” Koshoffer said.
