Other sports: Laser sailor Khairulnizam makes waves in Spain ahead of Asiad

PETALING JAYA: Laser sailor Khairulnizam Afendy is showing good form heading to the Asian Games mission in Hangzhou in September after finishing in the top 30 at the World Cup in Hempel, Spain.

The 28-year-old managed to finish 27th in the Gold fleet in the ILCA 7 (Laser) category in the meeting that just ended.

Khairulnizam, a silver medalist at the Asian Games in Indonesia four years ago, managed two top-10 finishes.

“I managed to finish 27th out of 165 participants. I am very happy because it is the highest level of participation in the World Cup.

“It’s time for me to go home now and prepare for the ILCA 7 World Championships in Mexico in May,” Khairulnizam said.

Three-time Olympian sailor Khairulnizam became EurILCA European Cup champion in Port de Pollenca last month.

Langkawi-born Khairulnizam also took silver at the Asian Sailing Championships in Abu Dhabi and is hoping to step onto the podium for the second consecutive time at the Asian Games later this year.

His father Mohd Afendy Abdullah also posted a congratulatory message on his Facebook account.

“Finally, Khairulnizam Afendy has placed himself on the same level as the best sailors in the world.

“Achieving 27th place out of 165 participants in the Gold fleet is an exceptional achievement.

“That should give him confidence that he is still relevant for the Asian Games and the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

“Thank you to everyone who helped Khairulnizam and I hope he can continue to make a name for himself for the country.”
