After four years, Royal Caribbean is increasing the tipping rate that cruise ship passengers will pay for the service they receive from crew members on board its ships.
Each guest pays a daily gratuity that covers the services of the crew members they interact with the most, and this daily rate is charged automatically unless the guest prepays it before the cruise.
Effective September 7, 2022, automatic daily tipping will increase:
- Standard Stateroom (Junior Suites and below) ranging from $14.50 to $16.00 per day, per person
- Suite tipping rate will increase from $17.50 to $18.50 per day per person
Royal Caribbean last increased tips on January 2, 2018.
Daily gratuities are shared between catering, bar and culinary services staff, cabin attendants and other hotel services teams working behind the scenes.
Royal Caribbean stipulates that in the unlikely event that an onboard guest to whom the daily automatic gratuity is charged does not receive satisfactory service, the guest may request to change the daily amount at their discretion by visiting onboard customer service until on the morning of his departure.
For new bookings, adjusted tip amounts are effective September 7, 2022.
Passengers who booked before September 7, 2022 can choose to prepay gratuities before departure to take advantage of current fares. Effective September 7, 2022, regardless of when the reservation was created, gratuities paid on board are subject to the new increased rates.
Pre-existing reservations confirmed before September 7, 2022 will not be subject to the increased guidelines as long as gratuities are paid prior to departure. If passengers choose not to pay tips until boarding, they will be subject to the new suggested tip amounts.
This automatic tip does not cover other onboard purchases. 18% gratuity is automatically added to all beverages, mini-bar items, and spa and salon purchases.
Other cruise lines have already made similar changes
Other major cruise lines have already increased their tips this year.
In April 2022, Carnival Cruise Line increased gratuities to $14.50 per person per day for standard staterooms and $16.50 per person per day for suites.
Norwegian Cruise Line also increased its tips in April, when it changed its rates:
- Balcony and lower cabins: $16.00 per person, per day
- Haven and Suite guests: $20.00 per person, per day
- Club Balcony Suite guests stay at $18.00 per person per day
In July, Disney Cruise Line increased gratuities to $14.50 per night, per person for standard rooms and $15.50 per night, per person for suite guests.
How Tipping Works on a Cruise
If you do absolutely nothing, you can expect an automatic charge to your SeaPass account each day of the cruise.
The exception is in some markets where tipping isn’t as ingrained in their culture, so Royal Caribbean includes daily tipping in the cruise fare. This is happening in the Australian cruise market.
Each guest, regardless of age, will be awarded the daily gratuity in recognition of the hard work of the crew members each day.
An alternative is to prepay the tip before the cruise begins. When agreed to by the guest, you will pay the full gratuity amount prior to the start of the cruise on the final payment date. It will appear as a line item on your final payment.
Prepaid gratuities may be added to an individual booking at any time outside of 48 hours from the departure date.
Guests booked directly with Royal Caribbean can prepay gratuities by calling 866-562-7625 or logging on to www.royalcaribbean.com prior to departure.
Customers who have booked through a travel agent can ask their agent to add prepaid gratuities to the customers booking prior to departure.
