Missiles hit a building in the Ukrainian port city of Odessa

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has threatened to abandon peace talks in the face of attempts by Moscow to crush the last pocket of resistance in Mariupol.

The Russian attack on the Azovstal steelworks comes just days after Vladimir Putin said his troops would not storm the site, where hundreds of Ukrainian soldiers and civilians are holed up.

“If our men are killed in Mariupol, Ukraine will withdraw from any negotiation process,” Zelensky said, ahead of a meeting with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin in kyiv. .

Speaking at a press conference, Mr Zelensky gave few details of the meeting, but said he expected concrete results – ‘not just gifts or some kind of cake, we are expecting specific things and specific weapons”.

Earlier, Russia pounded several towns in southern and eastern Ukraine, killing a three-month-old baby and eight others in the black port city of Odessa.

“The war started when this baby was a month old. Can you imagine what is happening? said Mr. Zelensky.


Russian shelling kills two children in Donetsk, governor says

Two Ukrainian children were killed by Russian shelling in Donetsk, the region’s governor has said.

Pavlo Kyrylenko said a 5-year-old child and a 14-year-old girl died in Ocheretynsk when their house was destroyed on Sunday.

He urged civilians to flee the fighting.

Russian troops targeted nine Ukrainian military targets overnight, including four arms depots in the Kharkiv region, the Kremlin said.

Russia must agree to a ‘real Easter truce’, says Ukraine

Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak urged Russia to agree to a “real Easter truce” and an immediate humanitarian corridor from Mariupol.

“Russia continuously attacks Mariupol Azovstal. The place where our civilians and military are is being bombarded with heavy air bombs and artillery,” he tweeted.

Mr Podolyak added that the Kremlin needed to reflect on “the remnants of its reputation”.

Russia deploys missile launchers to battlefield near Ukrainian border, Ukrainian military says

Russia has deployed battlefield missile launches within 40 miles of the Ukrainian border and increased the number of troops in the Belgorod border region, the Ukrainian military said.

“According to available information, Iskander-M launchers were deployed 60 km from the border with Ukraine,” he said on Sunday.

“Then the enemy increased the number of troops in the Belgorod region by transferring and concentrating additional units,” the army added.

Switzerland blocks German arms shipment to Ukraine, report says

According to local media, Switzerland is blocking a shipment of German arms to Ukraine.

Swiss newspaper SonntagsZeitung reported that the country was blocking the export of ammunition made in Switzerland by German arms manufacturer Rheinmetall.

Germany, which has come under growing criticism for delivering heavy weapons to Ukraine, is believed to have investigated the situation.

“The two requests from Germany received a negative response with reference to Swiss neutrality,” said a spokesperson for the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO).
