Volgotrans sues Lotos shipyard for more than 800 million rubles in total

The shipping company claims a penalty in the context of a contract for the construction of a chemical tanker for the RST25 project

Shipping company Volgotrans filed a lawsuit against Shipyard Lotos (a company of United Shipbuilding Corporation, USC) for 833.1 million rubles, according to a publication on the arbitration cases portal. According to a court ruling, one of the lawsuits is seeking a fine under a construction contract for the Volgo-Don Max tanker of the RST25 project (designed by Marine Engineering Bureau-SPb, hull No. 25007) dated 2015. The vessel is destined for Volgotrans. The shipbuilding company declined to comment. The contract provides for the construction of four tankers for Volgotrans.

The court accepted both requests. Court hearings are scheduled for October 31, 2022.

Seven RST25 tankers are in operation. Three of them were built by the Rybinsk-based Nobel Bros shipyard, two – by the Zelenodolsk shipyard named after А.М. Gorky.

The design of the tanker takes into account the special requirements of Russian and international oil companies as well as the additional environmental requirements of the Russian River Register (from July 20, 2022 – Russian Classification Society) ECO3 (CLEAN DESIGN by DNV). The vessel is intended for mixed river-sea transport of crude oil and petroleum products, including gasoline, without flashpoint limit and at a cargo temperature of 50°С, as well as vegetable oils and chemical products. The simultaneous transport of 2 types of goods is ensured.

The RST25 ships are of the Volga-Don Max class. LOA – 139.99m, BOA – 16.6m, Depth – 5.5m.

Capacity of six cargo tanks and two slop tanks – 6,990 m3, draft fresh / salt water – 4.175 m / 3.60 m, maximum draft DWT – 6,617 tons salt water, 5,136 tons in fresh water, operational speed – 10.5 knots. The tanker is powered by two 1,200 kW medium speed diesel engines running on IFO380 heavy fuel oil. Endurance – 20 days, crew – 12 (14 places).

The lead ship of the RST25 project, the Sergei Terskov (hull n° 25004) was started at Lotos on September 6, 2011, launched on July 24, 2015 and delivered on April 7, 2016.

The second ship of the RST25 project, the Yakov Gunin (Hull No 25005) was laid down on September 6, 2011, launched on September 26, 2015 and delivered on July 12, 2016.

The third ship, the Volgotrans-2501 (hull no. 25006) was laid down on March 25, 2016 and launched on June 28, 2019.

The fourth ship, the Volgotrans-2502 (hull no. 25007) was started on April 7, 2016.

Lotos shipyard, one of the largest enterprises in the southern region of Russia, has specialized in ship repair since 1900. The facilities of the shipyard can accommodate ships up to 6,000 tons and up to 140 meters. Lotos is experienced in building non-self-propelled barges and pontoons for shipping companies operating in the Volga-Caspian Basin. Over the past decade, the company has launched a dozen such ships.
